Making Our New Home in a New Place
In 1967, our family’s safe space changed, we went from the shores of Cuba to the hustle and bustle of Chicago. Everything changed in my life, even the weather. We worked together to learn English, make a living, and get a good education in a FREE country. My mom was the foundation of our family, the symbol of empowerment, strength, resilience, and beauty. She always wanted to be a hairdresser and finally she had the opportunity to pursue her dream. It wasn’t long before she opened her first salon.
Running the salon was more than a full-time job, it was her dream come true – she was successful in America. The family was involved almost every step of the way, everyone had a role/job in the salon. Every major business decision was a family conversation over dinner at 5pm.
Fast Forward 15 Years
My mom’s passion and excitement for her craft was so infectious, I was naturally drawn to hairdressing and went to Cosmetology school followed by U of I for business administration. I was the first in our family to go to college! I had the drive and knowledge to continue the dream my mother started long ago. Upon my mother’s retirement I accepted ownership of Hair Base Salon & Spa where we continue to incorporate the lessons learned in the early days.
No One is Left Out – Inclusion is Our Love Language
Honoring my mother’s goal of supporting, empowering, and providing opportunities for women, we are a woman owned, woman run business. Our team is diverse, collectively we speak English, Arabic, Spanish, and Assyrian. Our staff are given an opportunity to develop a career that includes continual education and opportunities for growth focused on the industry trends, products, and techniques.
We attend beauty conferences and specialized training in new techniques on a regular basis. I strive to stay true to the original goal of creating a haven for our staff, where one can develop financially, mentally, and emotionally. We dine, learn, travel, celebrate and honor life events. I believe in the philosophy of pay it forward.
We pride ourselves on growing our salon family – one client at a time. When you’re here, you are part of making our dream come true: To be successful while transforming lives through the artistry of hair.
